Sunday 14th March

The centurion (Luke 7:1-10)
Sometimes you just know.
I’ve trained
So many men:
Each one unique,
But some whose demeanour
Let me know
They would rise quickly
Through the ranks.
So too this rabbi.
Though there is much
I do not understand,
Posted to a strange people,
With a perplexing faith
Which somehow draws me.
I’d seen him
As I dutifully watched the crowds
For signs of discontent,
Yet listened too
To words of grace
So deeply unfamiliar.
So of course I sent for him,
Later realising
I did not even need him here.
And, by some miracle
I do not claim
To understand,
The healing came.
