The nameless “sinful woman” (Luke 7:36-50 revisited)

“You will be remembered”

Jesus said

But still no recognition

And so much misunderstanding

As everyone assumes

You were weeping

Tears of repentance

Instead of tears -

As I suspect -

Of unremitting suffering.

And I am sorry

That they did not record your name.

And yet

This sad omission

Is perhaps

Also a gift.

For with no name

You somehow

Represent so many of us

Who, having lost all hope,

Live out our lives

Of quiet desperation

And self-disgust

Whilst longing

For the recognition

And acceptance

Of the Saviour.
